What is the best open source wiki system ?

Hi,

My boss asked me today to look for wiki system to install on our shared hosting site (PHP, MySQL support). We are not-for profit organization and have 30 employees (student-workers) I've been reading and comparing some wikis at the wikimatrix .

Rihgt now, I am considering Dokuwiki. But I prefer a wiki that supports MySQL.

I want to ask you for some recommendation.

• There's a good comparison of wiki software on Wikipedia. It lays out everything by language, dbms, etc which should get you started.

• MediaWiki has a lot going for it and runs on MySQL.

• We used MediaWiki at work for awhile and I thought it worked really well, and was nice to use. We have since switched to Sharepoint, which I would not recommend for wikis.

• We use Dokuwiki at work and I like it for it's simplicity and the many useful plugins.

  It's equipped with the Dokubook-skin so it looks like a MediaWiki. It just feels lighter and simpler to install.

• OpenWiki is written in Classic ASP, very easy to set up and use.

• MediaWiki is good for standard wiki use cases. It does not support Page Access Restrictions though. There is a plugin to enable page restrictions available for this but the developer explicitly says that it hasn been tested enough to be 100% secure.

  If your wiki must have page restrictions I would recommend TWiki, which is very flexible and powerfull. (It does have page restricions features.) NB its written purely in perl.
